flash movie

This was a fun project.  I had no idea what song to pick, and after searching through my itunes, I decided that a Christmas song would be easiest to animate.  I went with the Twelve Days of Christmas.  I found a free version online.  However, once I started working with it, I realized there were some discrepancies with the version.  (You’ll see when you watch - it’s some added humor in my opinion.)  ;-) The only issue that I encountered was that the version of flash I downloaded on my Dell was a little different than the version in the Mac lab at TCNJ.  The animation part was different.  I searched for some tutorials online and was able to navigate through it.

Okay, here’s the video.  Hope you enjoy it!

Exploring Second Life

March 18th, 2009  Tagged ,

After completing the orientation, I tried to move about the world of Second Life.  I have no idea what the first place I visited was.  It was night time ,and I honestly think I ran into some prostitutes.  I tried to get out of there a quickly as I could! I used a website called http://slurl.com/ to help me find better locations to visit. The next place I traveled to was the Campus: Second Life.  It looked like it could be a great place to have lectures or hold classes.  Unfortunately, it was empty.

The next place that I ventured to was Princeton University.  The architecture was great.  I think that this is a great place for real students to meet virtually.

The last stop on my Second Life tour was the Eiffel Tower.  This was cool, since I have been there in person.  I took a picture from underneath it and it looked pretty realistic.  I think that visiting places of interest like the Eiffel Tower is great for social studies and geography teachers, as long as the locations in Second Life are comparable to the real-life locations.

Overall, it was fun to explore Second Life.  I think that if I were to try to use it with my students, I would be very worried about letting them roam free.  I would not want them to end up where I did at first!  This game really is not appropriate for my middle-schoolers.  It would be best for the collegiate setting.  I can see it’s benefits!

My First Scratch Game

March 3rd, 2009  Tagged ,

Here is my first attempt at creating a game in scratch.  This is a classifying numbers game.  Students are supposed to click only the prime numbers.  If they click a number that is not prime, they will be reminded of what a prime number is.  I enjoyed making this.  It took me a while to figure out “broadcasting”.  I downloaded similar games from the scratch website to help me figure it out.

My Comic Strip

comic-strip

This is my attempt at a somewhat humorous comic strip! It is based on a true story that took place in my class this year.

I definitely enjoyed this project. I have never really used Photoshop before (only watched friends use it), so I downloaded the free trial. It was a little tricky to get used to at first. I just played around with different photos and features in the beginning. Eventually, I began feeling more comfortable using Photoshop and decided it was time to try the comic strip.

I started with two pictures from my classroom from my first year of teaching. It was my first time decorating my own class, so luckily I took a bunch of pictures. Using the lasso and the eraser, I found a more recent picture of me and layered it in. I added a speech bubble and a caption. The pictures of my “students” are all from google images, as is the Chuck Norris image. (I didn’t want to use my actual students’ faces.) I resized them, erased the background from them, and placed them in my background. I made each section of the comic a separate jpeg image and then pieced them together into a new file at the end to create the “strip”. My only issue with this is the size of the final file. Looking back, I probably should have started with a long blank file and created the comic all at once.

It was a time-consuming but fun process! I am pretty happy with my final project. This is definitely a great way for students to story-tell. I know they would certainly enjoy the process! My students love finding math related comics in the paper and bringing them into me already. It would be great if they could create their own!

RSS Feeds

February 10th, 2009  Tagged ,

I chose to add two RSS feeds to my blog. The first is TCNJ News. I feel this is important to keep up to date with what is going on at the college. I also added a Math Challenges feed. I thought this would be great for me since I am a math teacher and could use the feeds in my classes. Unfortunately, the site itself has not been updated in a couple of months, so consequently the RSS feed hasn’t been updated either. I am hoping to find an RSS feed to a similar site that is updated more frequently

It was pretty easy to add the feed to my blog. I actually added them to my google reader first, then copied and pasted the code to the blog.

Need a Bibliography??

February 10th, 2009  Tagged ,

I have found that my students have no idea how to create a correct bibliography. I think they would find this site very useful! It lets them choose the type of source (ie. article) and then input the necessary information. Then, all they have to do is click “Create Citation” and they have their bibliography!

EasyBib: the bibliography maker.

Students Blogging…

February 5th, 2009  Tagged ,

I’ve been using Teacher Tube in my class a lot lately, and came across this video about students blogging. I thought it brought up a lot of good points.
